Veteran Jamaican radio host, Wilmot ‘Motty’ Perkins Dies

Prominent Jamaican radio host, Wilmot ‘Motty’ Perkins has died after battling a short illness.

The veteran journalist died peacefully at his home, shortly after 1 a.m. this morning. He was 80 years old.

Prior to his death, Perkins was the longest serving radio host in Jamaican history; starting his career in 1960 with the Radio Jamaica (RJR) program, What’s Your Grouse.  

After a brief hiatus where he focused on farming, Perkins returned to radio in the 1970s when he hosted the popular talk show, Public Eye on JBC. 

Furthermore, Perkins hosted programs such as Hot Line, Straight Talk on KLAS FM before hosting Perkins On Line on Hot 102 FM. Perkins has hosted Perkins On Line via Power 106 FM since 2002; focusing on key political issues with strong analysis and sometimes controversial theories that grabbed the ears of several Jamaican and foreign listeners.

In addition his radio exploits, Perkins also spent time as a reporter for the Jamaica Gleaner; proving himself as one of Jamaica’s most articulate journalists prior to the start of his on air career.

Wilmot ‘Motty’ Perkins was survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine as well as his grandsons, Jamie and Eden.
