Cop Accused Of Killing Pregnant Women Denied Bail

Corporal Dwayne Smart who is charged with the murder of St.Thomas resident, Kayann Lamont, was on Wednesday morning denied bail. The police Corporal was charged on September 5, following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Corporal Smart was making his second appearance in the Home Circuit Court following a much publicised incident on September 1, during which he shot and killed Miss Lamont, who was eight months pregnant at the time.

In court this morning his attorney Valerie Neita Robertson applied for bail but her application for bail was denied. The presiding judge said bail was denied based on the circumstances of the case. The court was told this morning that Mr. Smart pointed his gun at a colleague who tried to restrain him after the woman was shot.

According to the colleague’s statement he cautioned Corporal Smart prior to the shooting about the way he was treating the heavily pregnant woman. However, Corporal Smart told the court that he was attacked by Miss Lamont's relatives and other people in the crowd at Yallahs.

According to him his uniform was torn in the process. Corporal Smart is also accused of trying to kill Miss Lamont's two sisters, who were with her when she was shot twice in the head.

On Monday his attorney had requested more time to examine statements collected in the case. He's facing charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm, wounding with intent, and assault.  Miss Lamont was shot in the head in Yallahs square during a tussle with Corporal Smart on  September 1. The policeman had reportedly accosted her over the use of indecent language.

Miss Lamont's sister, Novia, was shot in the shoulder while reportedly assisting her. Another sister, Shemean Lamont, was allegedly assaulted by the cop, who also turned the gun on her. However, she escaped injuries.
