Several members of the St Thomas police have been taken off frontline duties following the fatal shooting of 63-year old farmer Alvin Allen on Monday during an alleged shootout, and subsequent protest by residents, yesterday.
Police said that acting on reports of shots fired in Green Castle, Bath, they went to a four acre ganja farm. Three occupants of a zinc shed were found, where two of the men reportedly opened fire on the lawmen.
Two of the men escaped, while Allen was found with gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was rushed to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Twenty two rounds of 9mm cartridges were recovered from the shed, the police said.
Residents of Bath mounted several roadblocks along the main road in protest, disputing the claims of the police.
Deputy Superintedent Beresford Williams of the St Thomas police has indicated that the incident is being investigated by detectives from INDECOM.
