American Rapper Common To Make Debut at Reggae Sumfest

Grammy-winning American hip-hop star, Common has been confirmed as one of the international acts set to perform at Reggae Sumfest 2015, set for mid-July.

The acclaimed entertainer and actor will headline International Night 1 on July 17 in what will be his debut performance in Jamaica. Johnny Gourzong, the executive director of Summerfest Productions spoke of the decision to bring Common to the Sumfest stage in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

“We are elated to have a performer of the magnitude of Common on the Reggae Sumfest stage,” he said. “He is a versatile artiste and undoubtedly he will add something very special that our audience will be able to appreciate. He has a unique and vibrant style that will excite patrons.”

“Patrons have come to expect only the best at Reggae Sumfest,” he continued. “Common is the first of our announcements on this years line up, I would say we are off to a great start!”
Common has been a staple within the hip-hop music scene since debuting in the early 90s as Common Sense, notably releasing the hit single, I Used To Love H.E.R. His socially conscious lyrics have made him one of the most respected artists in the business, with subsequent hits such as The Light, Come Close (feat. Mary J. Blige), The 6th Sense, The People, Testify and Go.

He also is only one of two hip-hop acts (Eminem is the other) to win a Grammy and an Academy Award for Best Original Score, winning the former alongside Erykah Badu for their 2003 collaboration, Love Of My Life in 2003, while the latter was won at this year’s Oscars, taking home the honour for his joint effort with John Legend, Glory from the 2014 movie, Selma.

Reggae Sumfest 2015 will be staged from July 12-18 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex in Montego Bay.
