Popcaan Wins 2015 MOBO Award For Best Reggae Act

Dancehall artiste Popcaan won the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act earlier this evening. The awards ceremony took place at the Leeds’ First Direct Arena in London.

Popcaan, who was not present at the event, beat out other nominees, including Chronixx, Stylo G, Protégé, and OMI.  This was Popcaan’s fourth nomination.

Popcaan impacted the UK music scene this year with hits including ‘Where We come From’ and ‘Bad Inna Real Life’. His 2014 collaborative single ‘Kisses for Breakfast’ with British singer Melissa Steel reached number 10 on the British pop chart.

The MOBO Awards for "Music of Black Origin" were established in 1996 by Kanya King and Andy Ruffell. The MOBO Award show is held annually in the United Kingdom to recognise artists of any ethnicity or nationality performing black music.

The MOBOs may be the most prestigious but were not the first Black music awards show in the country. In Britain, the Black Music Awards (BMA) show ran from 1992 to 1996 in various venues in London. For non-music shows, the Afro Hair and Beauty show was set up by Dyke and Dryden beauty company in 1982,[3] and is still an annual event in London.
