Contrary to several media reports, the assets of embattled dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel whose given name is Adidja Palmer have not been seized. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Elan Powell, head of Criminal Investigation Bureau, he was unaware of any such undertaking.
"I don't know anything about that and if that was the case, I would know,"- Powell stated.
It's further alleged that the items were seized under the newly passed 'Proceeds Of Crime Act' which empowers law enforcement officials to confiscate the asset(s) of
someone if it is suspected that they were acquired by illicit means.
The
reports also claim that the deejay's 2010 Mercedes Benz S-Class, a
laptop and documentation regarding properties he owns were seized and
are being stored at the Police Commissioner's Office in St Andrew.
Vybz Kartel was arrested October last year and later slapped with two separate
charges of murder. The entertainer, along with two other men -- Nigel
Thompson and Lenburgh McDonald -- have been charged with the July murder
of 27-year-old Barrington 'Bossie' Bryan, a promoter of a Gregory Park
address in St Catherine.
In relation to that incident, the men were also charged with illegal
possession of firearm and are to return to the Gun Court Division of the
Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on February 3.
