The UDC Car Park in New Kingston shook with excitement on Friday night with the staging of Heineken Best of Summer Concert.
The concert was headlined by hip-hop artiste Rick Ross along with several local acts, who all gave memorable performances.
Organisers were quickly forgiven for the 90-minute late start when the
first performer Masicka hit the stage. The fast-rising dancehall artiste
received numerous cheers as he delivered Go Hard and Done, Whistling
Clean and Lose Control.
Tifa, the evening's sole female performer, followed and was also well-received. Masicka Tifa, I-Octane, Potential Kid, and Aidonia all gave short but energetic performances as instructed by the organisers.
Although the dancehall acts had the patrons in a musical trance, it was
clear that they eagerly await the headliner Rick Ross.
Their desires
were not granted until approximately an hour and 20 minutes later. Moments later the 'hip hop boss' emerged and the crowd went wild.
Fireworks, and what seemed like hundreds of whistles were blown to
welcome Ross's entrance. Dressed in black, he hurled out the lyrics to
I'm Not a Star, The Boss, and Hustle Hard.
The media were later granted three-minute photo opts of Ross's performance.
"Jamaica, you know why I love this island so much? I grew up with a lot
of Jamaicans in New York. We used to eat a lot of 'bulli beef' and white
rice," he declared, before spitting the lyrics to I'm on One (a collab
with Lil Wayne and Drake).
Rick Ross had the audience, especially the females, in a musical frenzy with some shouting his nickname 'Rozay'. In between songs, Ross interacted with his audience saying how happy he was to be performing in the island.
After performing for approximately 45 minutes, Ross and his team made their exit from the stage.
