One week after the Guyana National Broadcasting Commission
announced that controversial Dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel was banned
from their airwaves, “Di Teacha” is back on radio in the South American
nation.
Last week Wednesday, Martin Goolsarran, a spokesman for the
state-owned radio outlet, National Communications Network (NCN),
confirmed that Kartel’s ban from Guyanese radio was
indefinite. Goolsarran implied that Kartel’s music offered “nothing
positive” to the entertainment industry and contained a mass amount of
obscene lyrics that weren’t appropriate for airplay.
However, reports from Guyana have indicated that some of Kartel’s
songs have found their way back on the nation’s airwaves. A NCN source said that Kartel’s songs are indeed being played via their TV and Radio outlets; specifying that the self-professed, “Dancehall
Hero’s” clean songs have been playing since the ban was originally
announced.
Kartel, who intimated that he has a friend who’s a disc jock in
Guyana, said that this confirms his Guyanese fan base is stronger than
any other artiste’s own. "I feel, or rather I know the Gaza fans in
Guyana outnumber every other artiste's fan base, regionally and
internationally,” Vybz Kartel stated.
Kartel’s initial reaction to the ban was that he would never travel
to Guyana again; suggesting he’d already made his mind up after
receiving multiple death threats from people in the country. Despite his
music being back on air, the “Worl’ Boss” says this news doesn’t change
his mind. "I cannot take back the spoken word. I love Guyanese people
in general but for security reasons, I'm gonna chill out from there for
the foreseeable future,” Kartel said.
