The track wasn’t even released as a radio single or album track. “Back to Back”, which was released earlier this year, has been nominated for Best Rap Performance at the Grammys. The diss track, aimed at Meek Mill, was released during the height of a beef between the two rappers. Meek Mill had accused Drake of using a ghostwriter to pen all of his lyrics and called him [Drake] out on Twitter.
Drake took an old school approach and wrote not one, but two diss tracks (the other song was named “Charged Up”). At its core, “Back to Back” was about Drake silencing detractors, addressing Mill’s taunts and looking to come out as the victor.
While the song was a big hit for Drake, many were surprised that “Hotline Bling” wasn’t selected as a contender for the category.
In an ironic twist, Drake was actually nominated twice for Best Rap Performance. “Back to Back” goes up against Meek Mill’s girlfriend (and Drake’s label mate), Nicki Minaj and her song, “Truffle Butter”, which also features Drake. Other contenders vying for Best Rap Performance include Fetty Wap (“Trap Queen”), J. Cole (“Apparently”) and Kendrick Lamar (“Alright”).
