Jamaican Reggae Artiste Buju Banton last night expressed profound appreciation to his fans for their support since December 2009 when he was indicted on criminal charges in the United States.
Banton whose real name is Mark Myrie is on drug and gun charges in the United States. He is to be re-tried next month after a jury failed to reach a verdict late last year.
Buju was performing at his Before the Dawn concert in Florida capital. Downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park Amphitheatre erupted last night when Buju Banton, emerged from back stage under dim lights.
The show billed, Before the Dawn, the name of Banton’s prophetic new album – was a sold out event in the 6,500 capacity venue.
As the crowd roared and anxiety mounted, Buju moved into his hit ‘Destiny’. When the lights came on, Buju dressed in a pair of black pants, a black vest and white shirt, stood centre stage and extended his wiry frame as he stretched to the heavens, belting out his tune.
In the audience, one woman who said she travelled from Atlanta was spell-bound. With her hands clasped, and eyes fixed on the large screen with images from the stage, tears streamed down her face. This was the first time Buju was performing since December 2009, when his legal troubles began.
Buju had earlier listened to ringing endorsements from several artistes, who also graced the stage including Nadine Sutherland, Wayne Wonder, Gramps Morgan, Freddie McGregor, Everton Blenda, Tarrus Riley, Sean Paul and Shaggy.
Throughout his performance Buju would infuse sarcasm and metaphors to relate to his predicament.
However, on one occasion his question were clear. Close to the end of his almost two hour-long presentation Buju would recall some of the acts to perform with him and introduce ones like Marcia Griffiths, Stephen Marley and Damian Marley.
