Macka Diamond Makes Dominican Debut

Dancehall's money goddess Macka Diamond returned last week from a trip to Dominica, where she performed as part of an initiative of the Government of Dominica to encourage the growth of that island's creative and musical industry-and it was a hit.

"That was my first time in Dominica and it was crazy. I don't think I've ever performed anywhere like that before! The energy was just wicked," she said.

She performed at the Crazy Coconuts venue on June 30 as the headline act on a concert named 'Ladies Night Out'. The show also featured 10 young female artistes who are finding their way in the Dominican music industry.

However, Macka had to dig deep into her bag of musical shots to satisfy the salacious entertainment appetites of the dancehall-hungry crowd. The audience, who were relentless in showing their approval for the artiste's, got into a crazed frenzy as Macka went further and further back into her catalaugue of singles.

The crowd responded with roaring approval when older songs like Lexus & Benz, Bun Him, Tek Con began to blast through the venue's sound system.

"It was really something to see. I would never have thought that there were so many dancehall fans here, and for them to know every song word for word. Even I had to be listening to the songs during rehearsals and on the way to venue to make sure I didn't mess up the lyrics," Macka said.

Macka, who is also an author, is set to work with one of the Dominica's more popular bands, Triple Kay and its lead singer Benjie and will be the first dancehall artiste to collaborate with the band.

"That I am definitely looking forward to. Whatever comes of our collaboration is sure to be a hit song, because both our types of music just make people want to move and have fun," the artiste remarked.

Macka Diamond is set to be back in Dominica in August.
