Despite several challenges over the past week including the theft and subsequent recovery of his travel documents; Dancehall artiste Blak Ryno reign supreme at the 2011 staging of Lovefest in St. Lucia.
Hosted by Hot 105.3 FM, one of the island’s largest radio outlet. The three day festival boasted a stellar line-up featuring: Jah Cure, Demarco, Bugle, Christopher Martin, Popcaan, G-Whizz, Jah Vinci, Stephen McGregor, Khago and Live Wyya Band among others. However, it was Blak Ryno whose given name is Romane Anderson that emerged as the dominant act at the weekend-long event, delivering a scintillating hour long performance in spite of only a thirty minutes booking.
Given the task of closing the show on Saturday Night, the Garrison recording artiste made his entrance accompanied by St. Lucia’s Dj HP in the wee hours of Sunday morning to the Head Concussion produced ‘Bike Back’, immediately garnering loud cheers from the capacity crowd at Saamans Park in the capital. The ladies segment quickly gave suit to a more conscious set interspersed with cameos from former Gaza member Jah Vinci and Ryno protégé Kaliba .
Forty five minutes later, a seemingly sweat drenched Ryno could do no wrong and soon deviated into some more hardcore classics paying respect to Vybz Kartel and Stephen McGregor, both of whom have been instrumental in his success as an artiste.
“big up Vybz Kartel because a him send me to the world and mek people know me, even with everything weh happen me still nah wish bad fi nuh man, big up Khago and Jahvinci. Memba say things happen inna life but we nuh ungrateful so big up Stephen too.”
His speech was given the nod of approval as the crowd responded with deafening applause. Moments later Ryno exited the stage and had to be rushed to safety by security detailing as hordes of patrons converged on the artiste. Other commendable performances of the night included Jah Vinci, Khago and Stephen McGregor.
Meanwhile, Blak Ryno is booked to appear at popular radio jock ZJ Wahwa Birthday celebrations entitled ‘Guinness – Selected Few’ slated for Rev Night Club, Portmore on December 16th.
